The University recently received a generous donation of HK$20 million from the Wu Jieh Yee Charitable Foundation Limited for the research development of the Centre for Cancer and Inflammation Research of the School of Chinese Medicine. In recognition of the Foundation's generosity and support, a Naming Ceremony was held on 9 November 2010. Officiating guests were Dr. Patrick Wu, JP, Dr. Philip Wu, BBS, JP, Directors of the Wu Jieh Yee Charitable Foundation; Mr. Wilfred Wong, SBS, JP, Chairman of the HKBU Foundation and Chairman of the Council and the Court; Professor Albert S. C. Chan, President and Vice-Chancellor; and Professor Liu Liang, Dean of the School of Chinese Medicine. The Centre has been named the "Shum Yiu Foon Shum Bik Chuen Memorial Centre for Cancer and Inflammation Research" in memory of Ms. Shum Yiu Foon and Ms. Shum Bik Chuen, sisters who were devoted to serving the Wu family. The two sisters brought up the children and helped with household chores with such love and dedication that they came to be regarded as family members and are constantly remembered by the Wu family. Unfortunately, they both passed away after suffering from cancer. At the ceremony, Dr. Patrick Wu stated that it is important to search for the causes of cancer and inflammation and to explore novel therapeutic strategies. He also wished the donation will enable the Centre to scale new heights in its research. In his address, Professor Albert S. C. Chan expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Foundation as well as the Wu family for their generous and continued support to the University. Professor Chan also mentioned that with the rapid development of Chinese medicine as well as the donation by the Foundation, the Centre will further advance through groundbreaking research into cancer and inflammation in the years to come. The ceremony was well-attended by guests of the Wu Jieh Yee Charitable Foundation and the Wu family members, Dr. Michael Wu, Secretary of the Wu Yee Sun Charitable Foundation Limited with his wife, and supporters and friends of HKBU, such as, Dr. Chan Yau Hing, Robin, GBS, LLD, JP, Chairman of Asia Financial Holdings Ltd., Ir Dr. K.K. Wong, SBS, JP, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Governors of Hong Kong Baptist University Foundation, as well as staff and students. |
