With the aim of advancing Chinese Medicine in the international arena, a forum on "System Biology in Cancer Research" was organised by the Shum Yiu Foon Shum Bik Chuen Memorial Centre for Cancer and Inflammation Research (CCIR) of School of Chinese Medicine on 15 June 2011. The forum provided a platform for participants to exchange views and enhance cooperation in exploring groundbreaking developments in cancer research.

CCIR was established in November 2010 with the generation donations by the Wu Jieh Yee Charitable Foundation Limited. The forum, which  attracted around 100 participants, was the Centre's first academic event and also part of the University's 55th Anniversary celebrations. Speakers invited to share their wisdom and insightful opinions were all distinguished scholars in the area of cancer research including Professor Ernest Fraenkel, Department of Biological Engineering of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, Professor Greg Tucker-Kellogg, Department of Biological Sciences of National University of Singapore, and Professor Wendy Hsiao, Associate Dean of the School of Chinese Medicine, HKBU.

At the opening of the forum, Professor Rick Wong, Vice-President (Research and Development), gave a welcoming address, while Professor David Fong, Associate Vice-President and CEO of Institute for the advancement of Chinese Medicine Limited, chaired the panel discussion. Other guests included Professor Liu Liang, Dean of Chinese Medicine, Mrs. Lily Chan, Director of University Advancement, Professor Zhao Zhongzhen, School of Chinese Medicine, Professor Bian Zhaoxiang, Director of Clinical Division, School of Chinese Medicine, and Professor Jiang Zhihong, School of Chinese Medicine.
