The University recently received a generous donation of HK$5 million from Mr. Franco Cutrupia, President of C.N.T. Limited, and Alumna Mrs. Pauline Wei Cutrupia, Managing Director of C.N.T. Limited, in support of the establishment of the "Mr. and Mrs. Franco Cutrupia Mainland Students Scholarship" to finance needy Mainland students to receive Whole Person Education at HKBU, so that they can broaden their horizon and contribute what they have learnt to society and the country after graduation.
In recognition of the donors' generosity, an agreement signing ceremony officiated by Alumna Mrs. Pauline Wei Cutrupia and Professor Albert S.C. Chan, President and Vice-Chancellor, was held on 8 May 2012 at Shiu Pong Hall of HKBU. After the ceremony, Mrs. Cutrupia shared her wise counsel regarding the University's development with the HKBU representatives at a lunch reception.
Professor Chan extended his gratitude to Mrs. Cutrupia for her ardent support to her alma mater, and he said, "Through the establishment of the Scholarship, we hope that qualified Mainland students will not be deprived of the opportunity to receive higher education because of financial reasons. This Scholarship is consistent with Mrs. Cutrupia's strong commitment to helping young people in China. Her benefaction will surely bring about a meaningful change to the lives of the students who are supported by this Scholarship."
The number of mainland students applying for admission to local undergraduate programmes has increased sharply over the years. However, the high tuition fees and living expenses for studying in Hong Kong have deterred many needy students from realising their dreams. With our profound belief in the power of education, we truly think that the best way for a person to rise out of poverty, in particular poverty suffered over several generations, is by receiving higher education. Although similar scholarships are offered for mainland students by other local universities, their scholarships are granted on the basis of academic merit. Our emphasis is on poverty alleviation and provision of education for everyone without any discrimination.
