In Memoriam:
Dr. the Hon. David C. Lam

The Foundation records with deepest sorrow the passing of Dr. the Hon. David C. Lam, CVO, OC, OBC, MBA, LLD, Honorary Permanent President of the HKBU Foundation and one of the founders of Hong Kong Baptist University, on 22 November in Vancouver, Canada.  He was 87 years old.

Dr. the Hon. David C. Lam was the Vice-Chairman of the Board of Governors and the Council (1956-1967). He joined with his family in making invaluable contributions to the founding of HKBU. He was the person who acquired the land from the Government to construct HKBU's first campus – the Ho Sin Hang Campus. When HKBU constructed its second campus, the Shaw Campus, in the early 1990's, Dr. the Hon. David C. Lam committed himself to raising the funds needed to build a special-purpose building to house an international education centre and succeeded in raising more than HK$20 million for the University. In appreciation of his many years of service to and support for the University, the building was named the David C. Lam Building. In 1993, the University renamed the Centre for East-West Studies as the David C. Lam Institute for East-West Studies in recognition of his support for the Centre. Over the years, Dr. Lam unstintingly donated his support for a wide variety of University projects, including the delivery of special lectures and the creation of a President's fund devoted to the nurturing of new ideas.

Dr. the Hon. David C. Lam was a successful developer and real estate investor. He was also a philanthropist who founded both the Floribunda Philanthropic Society and the David and Dorothy Lam Foundation, in support of various projects in Canada, Hong Kong and the Mainland. In recognition of his success and wisdom, Dr. the Hon. David C. Lam was named Lieutenant – Governor of British Columbia, Canada, in 1988 and he was the first Asian in Canada to hold such a position of trust. He will always be remembered for his whole-hearted support for and distinguished contribution to the development of the University.
