The Hong Kong Baptist University Foundation Dinner was held on 28 June at the Chater Room of Happy Valley Clubhouse of the Hong Kong Jockey Club. It was one of the commemorative events of the University's 55th Anniversary Celebrations and was a joyful occassion to express the University's appreciation for the support of Foundation members including members of the Board of Governors, Honorary Trustees, Honorary Permanent Presidents, Honorary Presidents, and supporters of the University.

The University recently received a generous donation of HK$25 million from Mr. Lee Man Bun Edmond, Managing Director of Lee & Man Paper Manufacturing Limited, and Mrs. Amanda Lee, designated for the development of the Institute of Creativity, HKBU Changshu Research Institute as well as research areas including chirotechnology and its applications in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries. In recognition of Mr. and Mrs. Lee's generosity, a cheque presentation ceremony was held at the dinner, during which Mr. Wilfred Wong, SBS, JP, Chairman of the Hong Kong Baptist University Foundation, and Professor Albert S.C. Chan, President and Vice-Chancellor, received a donation cheque from Mr. Edmond Lee on behalf of the University.

The Dinner was attended by over 110 honourable guests including Mr. Wilfred Wong and Professor Albert Chan; Dr. Wong Po Yan, GBM, JP; and Dr. Lau Wah Sum, GBS, OBE, JP, former Chairmen of the University Council and the Court; Dr. Daniel Tse and Professor Ng Ching-Fai, GBS, former Presidents and Vice-Chancellors; Ir Dr. Peter Wong, SBS, JP, Vice-Chairman of the Foundation and Co-Chairman of Entrepreneur Committee; Mr. Joseph Lee, SBS, JP and Dr. Ronald Lu, Vice-Chairmen of the Foundation; Mr. William Leung, BBS, JP, Treasurer of the Foundation and Chairman of Alumni Committee; Vice-Presidents, Associate Vice-Presidents, as well as Deans.

"We are delighted that HKBU ranks number 111 among the world's top universities, according to the World University Rankings in 2010-2011 released by Times Higher Education. This serves as an international recognition of our endeavors in striving for research and teaching excellence," he said.

In his speech, Professor Albert S.C. Chan expressed his heartfelt thanks to all the guests for their unfailing support over the years. Professor Chan recited a classical couplet which he had modified slightly himself to show his sincere appreciation to the friends and supporters of the University. "Our substantial achievements would not have been possible without your staunch support," Professor Chan said.

The Foundation's membership has grown steadily from 131 to 293, an impressive growth of 124% since its establishment, owing to the support of the community. Also, the Foundation has committed itself to raising an additional $155 million by the end of 2011, a timely gift to the University as it marks its 55th anniversary this year.

The dinner was enlivened by student and alumni performances including a cappella, folk song and Latin dance performances, and the screening of an award-winning animated film "The Shoes", which were highly praised by the audience.
