HKBU Foundation Dinner

The Hong Kong Baptist University Foundation Dinner was held at the Happy Valley Clubhouse of The Hong Kong Jockey Club on 4 December 2012. It provided a joyful occasion to acknowledge members of the Board of Governors, Honorary Trustees, Honorary Permanent Presidents, Honorary Presidents of the HKBU Foundation and supporters of the University for their generosity and tremendous support given to the University over the years.
 
In his welcoming remarks, Mr. Wilfred Wong, SBS, JP, Chairman of the Council and the Court of HKBU cum Chairman of the HKBU Foundation shared with the guests the recent outstanding academic and research achievements of the University and expressed his heartfelt gratitude to those individuals and organisations that had made donations towards the University's development. He said, "The rising recognition of HKBU's academic achievements is not only the result of the concerted efforts of teachers and students, but also the generous support of passionate individuals, which has enabled the University to implement various meaningful projects of far-reaching impact."

Mr. Wong mentioned that by the end of the previous year, the Foundation had raised over HK$550 million in donations, surpassing the original target of HK$155 million in celebration of the University's 55th anniversary.  The Foundation made further progress this year by achieving the annual target to raise at least HK$100 million.  Mr. Wong also announced on the occasion that Dr. Kennedy Wong, BBS, JP, Managing Partner of Philip K.H. Wong, Kennedy Y.H. Wong & Co., pledged to donate HK$10 million to the University for the establishment of the Distinguished Visiting Professorship Scheme.
 
In his vote of thanks, Professor Albert S.C. Chan, JP, President and Vice-Chancellor, reported that the 3-3-4 new academic system is running smoothly; the completion of the Academic and Administration Building and the Madam Kwok Chung Bo Fun Sports and Cultural Centre have largely increased the floor area of the University and enhanced the learning environment for students. Moreover, the University has recently established the Institute of Creativity, The Carter Center – Hong Kong Baptist University Initiative, Mr. Simon Suen and Mrs. Mary Suen Sino-Humanitas Institute, Ginseng Laboratory and so on.  These are all efforts to consolidate the University's research strengths and expand its commitment to serving the community.

Professor Chan expressed his gratitude to all members of the Board of Governors as well as the Entrepreneur Committee and Alumni Committee for their valuable advice on the University's fundraising strategies and the extension of its support base.  He also conveyed his heartfelt thanks to all Foundation members for their generous support of the University over the years.

The Dinner was well attended by over a hundred distinguished guests including Dr. Wong Po Yan, GBM, JP and Dr. Lau Wah Sum, GBS, OBE, JP, former Chairmen of the University Council and the Court; Mr. Cheng Yan Kee, JP, Deputy Chairman of the Council and the Court; Professor Ng Ching Fai, GBS, former President and Vice-Chancellor; Mr. William Leung, BBS, JP, Treasurer of the Council and the Court cum Treasurer and Chairman of Alumni Committee of the HKBU Foundation; Dr. Joseph Lee, SBS, JP, Vice-Chairman of the HKBU Foundation; Dr. John Chan, Co-Chairman of Entrepreneur Committee of the HKBU Foundation; as well as Vice-Presidents, Associate Vice-Presidents and Deans.

The programme was enriched by student and alumni performances including Chinese and western instrumental music, Latin and ballroom dance, and the screening of two award-winning short films entitled "Twenty Dollars" and "Defending our Homeland with Integrity". Their marvellous performances made it a thoroughly enjoyable evening for all the guests.

Thanks to the immense support the Foundation receives from the community, the Foundation's membership has grown steadily from 131 to 321, making an impressive growth of 145% since its inception. It is a testament to society's support for and recognition of the work of the University.
