In celebration of the 5th anniversary of the Hong Kong Baptist University Foundation, a dinner reception was held at the Happy Valley Clubhouse of The Hong Kong Jockey Club on 21 October 2014. It provided a joyful occasion for the University to express its gratitude to members of the Board of Governors, Honorary Trustees, Honorary Permanent Presidents and Honorary Presidents of the HKBU Foundation as well as supporters of the University for their generosity and staunch support over the years.
In his welcoming remarks, Dr. Wilfred Wong, SBS, JP, Chairman of the HKBU Foundation, encapsulated the fundraising achievements of the Foundation in the past five years. He said the University performed exceptionally well in the sixth round of Matching Grant Scheme. The University successfully raised a total of HK$589 million, comprising HK$381 million in donations and HK$208 million in matching funds. In terms of the total sum received, the University ranked fourth among the 17 participating tertiary institutions. Since its inception in 2009, the Foundation has raised more than HK$1 billion for the University and the membership stands at 500 representing an impressive growth of more than two-fold. Dr. Wong thanked the donors for their generosity and hoped that they would continue to render their ardent support to the University.
Speaking at the dinner, Professor Albert S.C. Chan, JP, President and Vice-Chancellor, introduced the latest developments of the University, including the academic and research endeavours of the Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology, the Partner State Key Laboratory of Environmental and Biological Analysis, and the HKBU (Haimen) Institute of Science and Technology. Professor Chan expressed his gratitude to all Foundation members and donors for their tremendous support for the University's development. He also thanked all members of the Board of Governors, the Entrepreneur Committee and the Alumni Committee for their valuable advice on the University's fundraising strategies and the extension of its support base.
The University recently received a donation pledge of HK$25 million from Miss Elizabeth Law, MH, Managing Director of Park Hotel Property Management Limited, to support the development of the Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology and to establish the Endowed Chair of Advanced Materials and the Mainland Students Scholarship Fund. In recognition of the donor's generosity, a cheque presentation ceremony was held during the dinner. Mr. Cheng Yan-kee, JP, Chairman of the Council and the Court, Dr. Wilfred Wong and Professor Albert Chan received a donation cheque from Miss Elizabeth Law on the University's behalf.
Around 130 honourable guests joined the event, including Professor Jao Tsung-i, GBM, Honorary Permanent Director of the Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology; Mrs. Pamela Chan, BBS, JP and Mrs. Doreen Chan, respectively Deputy Chairman and Treasurer of the Council and the Court; Dr. Lau Wah Sum, GBS, OBE, JP, former Chairman of the Council and the Court; Professor Ng Ching Fai, GBS, former President and Vice-Chancellor; Dr. Joseph Lee, GBS, JP and Ir Dr. K.K. Wong, GBS, JP, Vice-Chairmen of the HKBU Foundation; Mr. William Leung, BBS, JP, Treasurer of the HKBU Foundation and Chairman of its Alumni Committee; as well as Vice-Presidents, Associate Vice-Presidents and Deans.
The programme was enriched by students' vocal and dance performances. Their spectacular performances made it an enjoyable and memorable evening for all the guests.
