HKBU receives HK$10 million from Amway (China) Company Limited in support of the publications of Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology
19 June 2014

In July 2013, Amway (China) Company Limited made a generous donation of HK$10 million to the University to establish the "HKBU Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology – Amway Development Fund" in support of the publications of the HKBU Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology (BUJAS) for the promotion of Chinese culture.

The first issue of the Academy's yearly journal Bulletin of the Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology was published in April 2014. It provides an academic platform for scholars worldwide to share their insights and latest research findings in classical Chinese studies and sinology. A book launch officiated by Professor Jao Tsung-i, GBM, Honorary Permanent Director of BUJAS, Dr. Simon Suen, JP, Founding President of the Development Committee of BUJAS, President Albert S.C. Chan, JP, Founding Chairman of the Development Committee of BUJAS, Professor Chen Zhi, Acting Director of BUJAS, and Mr. Li Zhanling, Editor-in-chief of Chung Hwa Book Co. (HK) Ltd., was held on 19 June 2014.

In his speech, Professor Chan said the Academy has, for the first year running, been striving to pursue cutting-edge research in areas of classical Chinese studies and sinology, serving as a platform for academic exchange between East and West. He expressed his sincere gratitude to Amway (China) Company Limited for its generous donation, to Professor Jao Tsung-i for his kind consent to serve as Honorary Chief Editor of the Bulletin, and to those renowned scholars from around the world for their contributions to the Bulletin.

Dr. Suen expected that the Bulletin of the Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology would make a significant impact and become a publication with global influence with many first-class international sinologists being its academic consultants, editorial board members and authors, contributing to the revival of Chinese culture and the internationalisation of Guoxue.

Professor Chen said the Bulletin was a milestone in the Academy's development. The Academy would organise a number of academic events in the coming months to encourage research in classical Chinese studies and sinology, and to publish a number of book series to present classical Chinese studies and culture systematically.

The ceremony was well attended by many distinguished guests such as Ms Angeline Yiu, Honorary Patron of the Development Committee of BUJAS; Dr. Tang Wai Hung, Curator of the Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole of The University of Hong Kong; Mr. Lam Cheung Chuen, Chairman of Sun Tin Lun Holdings Limited, and Mrs. Lam; Dr. Wong Leung Kit Wah, Director of Gawina Limited; Mr. So Chung Ping, MH, Mr. Lam Cho Kwong and Mr. Yiu Yu Hung, respectively Chairman of the Executive Committee, Chairman of the Supervisory Committee and Vice-Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Tsim Sha Tsui District Kai Fong Welfare Association; Dr. Wong Kam Shing, Managing Director of Kowloon Watch Company; Mr. Raymond Leung of Comolux Ltd.; representatives of Soka Gakkai International of Hong Kong; Mr. Hui Lai Leung, President of Ren Tong Industrial Ltd., as well as members of the University community.
