Jointly established by the University and Lions Clubs International District 303 – Hong Kong & Macao, China, the Lions and Hong Kong Baptist University Chinese Medicine Charity Foundation recently received HK$800,000 in support of the "Privilege Scheme of Chinese Medicine Service for Elderly" to subsidise needy elderly people and patients suffering from chronic diseases to receive medical treatment provided by HKBU's designated Chinese medicine clinics.

In recognition of the donors' generosity, a cheque presentation ceremony was held on 14 May 2014. On behalf of the Chinese Medicine Charity Foundation, Professor Albert S.C. Chan, JP, President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Rick Wong, Vice-President (Research and Development) and Chairman of the Board of the Foundation, Professor Bian Zhao Xiang, Associate Vice-President and Director of the Clinical Division of the School of Chinese Medicine, and Professor Lu Aiping, Dean of Chinese Medicine, received donation cheques from the following donors:

• Lions Club of Tuen Mun (a donation of HK$300,000)
• Dr. Lam Hoi Ham (a donation of HK$100,000)
• Chiropractic Wellness Centre Limited (a donation of HK$100,000)
• Old Stone Hotels Company Limited (a donation of HK$100,000)
• Lions Clubs International District 303 - Hong Kong & Macao, China (a  donation of HK$100,000)
• Lions Club of Central (a donation of HK$50,000)
• Lions Club of Hong Kong Shouson Hill (a donation of HK$50,000)

In his speech, Professor Albert Chan expressed his gratitude to the donors for their staunch support for the Chinese Medicine Charity Foundation. Their kind donations enable the Scheme to sustain so that the needy elderly people and patients suffering from chronic diseases can receive appropriate treatment at HKBU Chinese medicine clinics. The Scheme also gives HKBU an opportunity to serve the general public while it strives to promote the development of Chinese medicine.

Professor Rick Wong said since the establishment of the Chinese Medicine Charity Foundation in 2007, it has received increasing recognition and support from the community. Under the Scheme, privilege cards have been issued to more than 2,700 elderly people and patients suffering from chronic diseases, with the subsidy provided by the Foundation amounting to HK$2 million.

Mr. Paulman Tse, Founding Member of Lions Club of Tuen Mun and Life Member of Lions Clubs International District 303 – Hong Kong & Macao, China, thanked members of the Lions Clubs for their tremendous support for the Foundation. He hoped that the members could gain a better understanding of HKBU through the visit and continue their support for the Foundation.

After the ceremony, the guests visited the School of Chinese Medicine and the Academy of Film. They were warmly received by Mr. Andy Lee, Vice-President (Administration) and Secretary, Professor Frank Fu, MH, JP, Associate Vice-President and Secretary-General of the HKBU Foundation, Professor Allan Chan, Associate Vice-President and Acting Dean of Business, Mrs. Lily Chan, Director of University Advancement, and Mrs. Helen Tsang, Head of the Secretariat of the School of Chinese Medicine. A lunch was hosted by Professor Chan after the visit.

Under the "Privilege Scheme of Chinese Medicine Service for Elderly", eligible patients need to use one coupon and pay HK$30 each time for receiving the Chinese internal medicine service provided by HKBU Chinese medicine clinics. The Chinese Medicine Charity Foundation will subsidise HK$130 for each consultation and the remaining expenses will be borne by HKBU.
