Opening Ceremony of the Mr. and Mrs. Lau Chor Tak Lodge for Distinguished Scholars
27 April 2012

HKBU received the donation of an apartment by Mr. and Mrs. Lau Chor Tak last year, which has been designated for receiving world-class scholars and distinguished visiting laureates. In recognition of the donors' ardent support, the residential unit was named the Mr. and Mrs. Lau Chor Tak Lodge for Distinguished Scholars, and an opening ceremony was held on 27 April 2012. The officiating guests were Mr. Lau Chor Tak, Managing Director of Fung Shing Land Investment Co. Ltd., Mrs. Lau, and Professor Albert S.C. Chan, President and Vice-Chancellor.

In his welcoming remarks, Professor Chan expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Mr. and Mrs. Lau for their generous support to the University, and he hoped that the Lodge would bring distinguished scholars from around the world together at HKBU, promoting international academic exchange and strengthening HKBU's status in the international academic arena. The naming is a token of appreciation from the University for the benevolence and generosity of Mr. and Mrs. Lau as well as their remarkable contributions to the higher education sector.

The donated apartment on Lai Chi Kok Road is located in the prime and convenient location in Kowloon. It has an approximate floor area of 1,700 sq. ft. with a market value of over HK$20 million. This spacious apartment is stylishly decorated with premium furnishings. The housewarming party was blissfully joined by Mr. David Lau, son of Mr. Lau Chor Tak; Mr. Frank Lau, Chairman of Sun On-Sunnex International Holdings Limited; as well as the representatives of the University.

Mr. Lau Chor Tak is a long-time supporter of HKBU. In the early 1950s, Dr. Lam Chi Fung, Chairman of the Baptist Convention of Hong Kong, proposed to establish Hong Kong Baptist College and Hospital. Mr. Lau, serving as a council member of the Convention, nominated Mr. David Lam to successfully obtain from the government a land grant in Kowloon Tong for the campus. Mr. Lau's first financial contribution to the University was made in 1955. Over the past five decades, Mr. and Mrs. Lau have consistently supported the University, making contributions to the HKBU Development Fund, the Student Hostel Project – Alumni Hall, Students' Characters Nurture Fund, Mr. and Mrs. Lau Chor Tak Scholarship Scheme for Outstanding Mainland Students, and Campus Ministries.
