In Memoriam: Dr. the Hon. Lee Quo Wei

The HKBU Foundation records with deepest sorrow the passing of Dr. the Hon. Lee Quo Wei, GBM, JP, Honorary Senior Adviser of Hang Seng Bank, which is an Honorary Trustee of the HKBU Foundation, and recipient of an Honorary Doctorate of Business Administration (1992) from HKBU, on 10 August 2013. He was 95 years old.

Dr. Lee was a prominent leader in the banking industry and served the Hang Seng Bank for more than 60 years. His many contributions to the financial sector include the development and launch of the Hang Seng Index in 1969, and his involvement in the formulation of the linked exchange rate system. A devoted community leader and philanthropist, Dr. Lee was highly respected in the Hong Kong community.

Dr. Lee's association with the University can be traced back to 1975 when he supported Baptist College in securing a low interest loan from the Government to help solve the College's financial problems. Over the years, Dr. Lee and his family foundation, Wei Lun Foundation Limited, donated more than HK$25 million to support various endeavours of HKBU, including the student hostel project, the Tsinghua University Visiting Professorships, the Wei Lun Foundation China Studies Scholarship, the construction of the David C. Lam Building, the establishment of the Wei Lun Academic Exchange Centre on the Tsinghua University campus, etc.

Dr. Lee made remarkable contributions to the development of education in Hong Kong. He contributed to the founding of The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1963 and served on the CUHK Council as Treasurer, Chairman and Life Member. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Hang Seng School of Commerce (now Hang Seng Management College) in 1980. He also had an impressive record of public service and was a member of the Executive Council and the Legislative Council. As Chairman of the Board of Education (renamed the Education Commission), he provided his wise counsel on the overall planning and development of the education system in Hong Kong. He was awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal by the HKSAR Government in 1997.

The HKBU Foundation conveys its heartfelt condolences to the Lee family at this time of bereavement. A delegation of the University, led by President and Vice-Chancellor, attended the funeral service on 22 August 2013 to pay our last tribute to Dr. Lee, who will always be remembered for his distinguished contribution to the development of the University and as a beloved and respected member of the HKBU community.
