The Thanksgiving Reception of the Hong Kong Baptist University Foundation was held on 27 February 2014 to celebrate the 5th Anniversary of the Foundation and to express its heartfelt appreciation to Foundation members and friends of the University for their ardent support. Professor Albert S.C. Chan, JP, President and Vice-Chancellor, announced that he was making a personal donation of HK$1 million for the University's long-term development. He has donated a total of HK$2.75 million to HKBU since he took office as President and Vice-Chancellor in July 2010.
Officiating at the ceremony were Dr. Wilfred Wong, SBS, JP, Chairman of the HKBU Foundation, Mr. Cheng Yan Kee, JP, Chairman of the Council and the Court of HKBU, and Professor Albert Chan. The Reception was well attended by about 100 guests including members of the Board of Governors, Foundation members, friends of the University as well as staff and students. They included Mrs. Doreen Chan, Treasurer of the Council and the Court; Mr. William Leung, BBS, JP, Treasurer of the Board of Governors and Chairman of the Alumni Committee; Dr. Justin Chiu, Dr. Cecil Chan and Ms. Cecilia Lee, members of the Board of Governors; Mr. and Mrs. So Wing Kin, Mr. So Chung Ping, MH, Ms. Delia Chan, Mr. Allan Kwong, Mr. Layon Lee, Mr. George Tse and other Foundation members, as well as Vice-Presidents, Associate Vice-Presidents and Deans of HKBU.
In his welcoming remarks, Professor Albert Chan introduced the latest developments of the University, including the establishment of the Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology, the Changshu Research Institute, the Haimen Institute of Science and Technology, and the Partner State Key Laboratory of Environmental and Biological Analysis with the approval of the Ministry of Science and Technology of the PRC. He also presented a couplet composed by himself to extend his appreciation and blessing to Foundation members and supporters of the University.
Dr. Wilfred Wong expressed his gratitude to Professor Albert Chan for his generous donation and to all donors for their enthusiastic support for the University. He said under the Sixth Matching Grant Scheme, the Foundation had exceeded the fundraising achievement of the previous round of the Scheme. It was also encouraging that the Foundation's membership had grown steadily from 131 to 404, an impressive growth of two-fold since its inception. Dr. Wong hoped that the Foundation would make further progress in the coming years.
To express the University's gratitude to the Honorary Vice-Presidents, Honorary Directors and Directors of the Foundation, Dr. Wong and Professor Chan presented them with Foundation Certificates at the Reception.
